It is my personal belief that all children can be readers and writers! I strive to foster a love of reading and writing in all my students.

EDUCATION:
I am thrilled to be working at Valley View as a Reading Recovery Teacher, Reading Intervention Teacher and Literacy Coach. I have been working in the Menomonee Falls School District for ten years. For the first 5 years of my teaching career, I was a first grade teacher at Shady Lane Elementary. After completing my Master's in Reading/Learning Disabilities at Cardinal Stritch University, I became a Reading Teacher at Valley View Elementary and Ben Franklin Elementary. Three years ago, I was trained as a Reading Recovery Teacher. Last year, I became one of Valley View Literacy Coaches and was also trained in our new intervention model, the Comprehensive Intervention Model. I am so excited to continue working with the students at Valley View.

CLASSES I TEACH:
I am a Reading Recovery Teacher at Valley View Elementary. Reading Recovery is a one-on-one intervention for first graders that need extra reading support. Students in Reading Recovery meet with me everyday for a half an hour. During that time we work on reading, writing, and word work. Our goal is to have all students that exit the Reading Recovery program be independent readers and writers.

I also provide reading interventions for some students at Valley View. Our reading interventions, from the Comprehensive Intervention Model, include; Interactive Writing, Guided Reading Plus, Comprehension Focus Groups, and Writing Aloud. Each intervention focuses on a different aspect of reading (decoding, writing, foundational reading skills, and comprehension). All four interventions also include a combination of reading activites that incorporate different aspects of reading, writing, and word work.

                                                                             Book Bag

Students will be reading appropriately leveled books the Reading Recovery program and interventions. These books will be sent home to practice with you in a special reading bag. Please encourage your child's efforts and let them know that reading is a priority by asking them to read the books from their bag every night. Attentive listening and praise will go a long way to build your child's confidence as a reader. These books should be read and returned to school the very next day.

                                                                        Cut Up Sentence
The cut up sentence is for reading recovery students only. A small brown envelope will be in your child's reading bag each night. This bag contains the sentence your child wrote in class. It has been cut apart and should be put together and read at home. Scramble the words and repeat this activity many times. Ask your child to find and read individual words. These sentence envelopes may be kept at home. Find a box to collect all of the envelopes as they come home. Pick 2-3 sentence envelopes out each night and try reading and unscrambling the words to make a new sentence for additional practice. This is a great activity to learn sight words and work on fluency.

                                                                    Parent Communication
Parent communication is vital to a child's progress in both reading recovery and reading interventions. I will be sending home progress reports that will communicate your child's current level and their progress towards grade level goals. Please feel free to contact me through email, phone, or conference with any concerns or questions.

AVAILABILITY:
The best time to reach me is before school from 8-9. I am at Valley View from 8-4 everyday. If I am unavailable during the school day, pleas feel free to email me at doersar@sdmfschools.org
